MORE INFO:

This Halloween season, The Invincible Czars bring their nightmarish-ly fun soundtrack to the world’s first feature-length horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920 Robert Wiene) with an immersive combined live soundtrack experience that transports audiences back 100+ years via an age-old tale accompanied by a chilling, tastefully-modern score featuring an impressive blend of traditional acoustic and present-day electric instruments. The band will also perform their lauded soundtrack for Nosferatu on several dates.

ABOUT THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920):

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari inspired modern day filmmaker Tim Burton and musicians like David Bowie with its strikingly modern visuals. Its craggy edges, disjointed backgrounds and heavy make-up have earned this dark fairy tale a reputation as the quintessential German Expressionist film. Its twist ending is also considered the first in cinematic history (and something Rod Sterling’s The Twlight Zone capitalized upon in the 1960s.)

Dr. Calilgari is one of the silent era’s most beloved and enigmatic works. It considered by many to be the first German Expressionist film and the first great motion picture in the horror genre. It is the first movie to incorporate surrealistic production in such and all-encompassing way with quirky sets, angular shadows and creepy make-up.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari tells the story of a mysterious traveler who arrives in a small village to showcase his Somnabulist (sleepwalker) in the local fair. Shortly thereafter, a series of murders lead the narrator, Franzis, and his friends to believe Dr. Caligari and his sleepwalking assistant may be responsible but something’s not quite right and the conclusion is quite surprising for 100 year old movie.

ABOUT NOSFERATU:

Nosferatu tells the story of Hutter and Ellen, a couple from the village of Wisborg. Hutter travels to Transylvania to sell a piece of property in Wisborg to Count Orlok. Hutter stays in Orlok’s castle only to learn that the Count is a vampire. Orlok purchases a house next to Hutter’s, locks Hutter in the castle and travels to Wisborg. On the way, he manages to possess Hutter’s employer and Ellen and strike the village with an outbreak of the plague. Hutter rushes home to stop him before it’s too late.
