STUDIO GHIBLI CHALK FEST 2023

July 6th, 2023 by North Park Theatre

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!

Bust out that chalk and join us for Buffalo’s Annual Studio Ghibli Chalk Contest, now celebrating its TENTH continuous year as one of the coolest expressions of Ghibli love on the planet.

ENTRY IS FREE!
All skill levels are encouraged!
Some chalking supplies will be provided!
FREE water for chalkers!

General prize packages TBA (they will be cool!) and will be sponsored by GKIDS Films—the American distributor of Studio Ghibli—and Gutter Pop Comics across the street.

PLEASE NOTE: 2023 is an exciting year for Ghibli fans, as it will mark the release of Hayao Miyazaki’s final 😉 animated feature: HOW DO YOU LIVE, coming to Japanese cinemas July 14th!

We don’t have an American release date yet, but we hope to make an announcement sometime soon.

You are free to use officially released trailers and marketing materials from HOW DO YOU LIVE as a source of chalk inspiration (as of this writing, all anyone has is the picture above); however, if you delve into scenes or artwork not part of the film’s promotional campaign, we will have to disqualify you. There’s a cool air of mystery surrounding this film, and we want to keep it that way!

As in previous years, the festival spans TWO days: August 5 – August 6th. Except in extenuating circumstances, artists will be judged according to one day’s worth of work.

Chalking starts at 9:00 AM Saturday and Sunday. (But you can start any time after.)

Final judging starts at 9 PM Sunday.

(Take a break at 11:30 AM to catch Hayao Miyazaki’s MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO on Saturday or HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE on Sunday!)

PLUS: If you missed any Ghibli posters over the years, KatyDid will have a table out with North Park prints, buttons, postcards, and all kinds of cool stuff…!

Please use non-permanent materials.
